Dolomite

1. Composition:
  • Chemical formula: CaMg(CO3)2
  • Name: Dolomite – natural Calcium magnesium dicarbonate, also known as "dolostone" and "dolomite rock," is a sedimentary rock composed primarily of the mineral dolomite, CaMg(CO3)2. Dolomite is found in sedimentary basins worldwide. It was named after the French geologist Déodat de Dolomieu (1750 – 1801), who discovered it during one of his voyages to the Alps of Tyrol. Lava with 95 relative percent dolomite are also considered dolomite.
  • Other name: Miricacit.
  • Synonyms: Ridofit, Taraspit

3. Application:
a. Fire brick production:
b. Ferrous Metallurgy and steel refining: Dolomite is used as flux to promote fluidity and to increase slag volumes as well as to produce Magnesium sinter.
c. Magnesium metal production:
d. Adhesive production:
e. Insulation material production:
f. Construction: Dolomite is used as aggregates, freestones, and boulders. Dolomite are used as ballast for railway tracks and aggregate in concrete.
g. Glass production: Dolomite account for 10 – 20 % of glass production materials.
h. Emery production: Dolomite abrasive is used to polish glasses and grind metals and nacre. Only pure dolomite containing less 2% insoluble residue can be used to produce emery.
i. Chemical and medicine production: Dolomite is required to be extremely pure, rich in MgO and not have a low content of clay and other impurities.
j. Nitrogenous fertilizer production: Dolomite is used as a nonstick substance for fertilizers made from NH4NO3.
k. Rubber production: Dolomite powder is used to harden rubber and accelerate the vulcanization process.
l. Production of cellulose paper, leather products, ceramic and lacquer: Raw dolomite powder or sintered dolomite can be used. Pure dolomite is used in ceramic production to achieve better quality of the glaze.
m. Agriculture production: In addition to limestone, dolomite is also used to produce dry sulfur to kill fungi and insects and to counteract soil acidity by neutralizing acid reactions in the soil.
n. Environment processing: Dolomite and its relating products are commonly used globally to filter and process drinking water, water for aquaculture and agriculture, waste water and acidic gases.
